Why Running Is Good For You

August 27th, 2010 No comments

How many people have you heard that have referred to a “runners high?”  If you are not a runner, than I am sure that you thought they were kidding.  A runner’s high is a high that is accompanied by confidence, happiness, and a feeling that you can run forever.  Driving around and observing runners you will not see many runners with big smiles on their face.  Running is difficult, but there are many benefits to it.  If you can get past the first couple of miles and learn to let yo

ur body relax, than you may be able to experience a runner’s high.

The great thing about running, and many other types of exercise, it is a great way to relieve stress and put yourself into a better mindset.  You can let your mind wander as you find your rhythm, or you can focus on something specific.  It is amazing how the problems that have been plaguing you seem to disappear.

Whether your body is suffering to get through a painful run, or it is a light enjoyable run you will reap huge re

wards.  You will be in better shape and you will have the feeling of satisfaction of completing it.  This is a peace that can stay with you all day long.

In case the previous doesn’t convince you that running is a great activity perhaps the following will:

-  Running is cheap.  Of all the other sports in the world, all you need in order to run is a pair of shoes.  Most other sports require a larger investment of capital to get started.

-  Running is quick and flexible to work around y

our schedule.  You can run anywhere at anytime.  This comes in very handy if you travel a lot for work.

-  Running can increase your cardiovascular basis very quickly.  It also burns a lot more calories than many other sports.

-  Running helps to maintain bone density.  Maintaining and increasing your bone density is something that is very important, especially later in life.  This will decrease your chances of bone breaks and osteoporosis.

-  You get to see the world when you run.  Think of all the things that you drive by or don’t even see on a daily basis.  Running introduces you to a world that you may not otherwise see.

-  You will meet new people running.  There are many running clubs that help you to prepare for events that you may want to participate in.  While you are training in these groups you are sure to meet new people.

-  Running makes your legs and lungs stronger.  This will give you more stamina for other things that you do.

There are so many benefits to running that people never think of.  After seeing all everything that you can get from simply putting one foot in front of the other, what’s stopping you from getting started?

Aviva Grand Prix

August 11th, 2010 No comments

The Aviva London Grand Prix is an annual athletics meeting at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre in London, England as part of the IAAF Super Grand Prix. Aviva Grand Prix takes place as highlight of the summer over two days, following last year’s great success of the longer format. Olympic champions and the world’s elite are expected to battle it out as they look to place fear in their competitors ahead of the World Championships. Previously one of the five IAAF Super Grand Prix

events, it is now part of the IAAF Diamond League. One of the highlights of the event is the Emsley Carr Mile, which dates back to 1953. The Emsley Carr Mile remains a fixture at the annual meeting, with a history spanning back to 1953 at the White City Stadium. Emsley Carr, an athletics fan and the editor of The News of the World, created an annual mile race in the hope that the first four minute mile would be achieved on British soil. Gordon Pirie won the first race, but Roger Bannister had r

However, the tradition continued, with the winner signing his name in a red leather-bound book identical to the Bible used in Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. Derek Ibbotson achieved the first sub-4 minute run at the race in 1956, and many of the best middle-distance runners have won at the Emsley Carr Mile since, including Sebastian Coe, Steve Ovett and Hicham El Guerrouj. ted a number of athlete’s record ambitions. Usain Bolt saw off Asafa Powell in the 100 metres main event, but pole vault favourite Yelena Isinbayeva lost for the first time in 18 competitions, beaten by Anna Rogowska. Christian Cantwell won a competitive shot put event against World and Olympic champions Reese Hoffa and Tomasz Majewski. A number of Britons won on home-turf: Mo Farah took the 5000 metres, Nicola Sanders the 400 metres, and Jemma Simpson, Jenny Meadows and Marilyn Okoro made it 1-2-3 in the 800 metres. Also, Kate Dennison set an eighth British record in the pole vault. Two stadium records were set on the second day, by Tirunesh Dibaba in the 5000 metres, and Lashinda Demus in the 400 metres hurdles (which was the fastest ever on UK soil). Carmelita Jeter won the 100 m with a personal best and Bernard Lagat won the historical Emsley Carr Mile title. 400 m runner Michael Bingham was the only UK victor that day. The event ended as Usain Bolt anchored the Racers Track Club team to the fourth fastest 4×100 metres relay ever. Aviva Grand Prix is one of the Classical event of its type. It is going to be held in London, U.K. on 13, 14 August 2010 at Crystal Palace National Sports Center. Aviva Grand Prix Tickets are available at SoldOutTicketMarket.com.

How NOT to Run a Marathon

August 10th, 2010 No comments

How NOT to run a marathon – Rainbow Trust Sports and Challenges Manager Paul Kwatia reveals all!

It’s almost 10 years ago since I ran my first and only London Marathon and even today the event still plays a big part in my life. It’s the biggest event in Rainbow Trust’s running portfolio and takes up almost a third of my time in planning and organising every year. I’ve been lucky enough to help hundreds of individuals achieve one of their biggest ambitions in their lives by comple

ting the event and unfortunately I’ve also seen many people fall at the last hurdle and unable to complete the marathon after months of preparation. Most of them have been due to training…either too much resulting in stress fractures, or too little resulting in muscle tears and serious ligament damage….and this is where my story fits in.

At the time of the 2001 London Marathon, I was in the process of looking for a new job in the charity sector. As well as organising a number of fundraisi

ng events at work I wanted to get some experience in raising sponsorship and decided to run the London Marathon. In my mind I was a young, fit individual..I played football at least twice a week and went to the gym regularly. With over 1000 employees at my workplace, the fundraising potential was enormous and I was confident of reaching my £900 target.

I was given a place in November by a friend who worked for Age Concern and attended a training day at Battersea Park in London, which was run

by the legendary Mr Motivator. As well as some stretching and warm up techniques, we were put through a 5K (3.5mile) training run around the park which I just about managed although I was one of the slowest in the group. It was a great experience and a chance to meet other runners of all abilities and share training and fundraising tips. At the end of the session I felt very positive and confident about my impending challenge and really felt I was part of a team…it wasn’t just me running the marathon anymore and any apprehension I felt had gone.

Approx three months later I had a car crash and suffered whiplash. By this time my training still consisted of playing football twice a week and going to the gym. Since November I had done no running whatsoever and now was going to be out of training for at least four weeks, with just eight weeks until my big day. I soon started to get a little concerned but managed to convince myself (and others..I think!) that I’d be able to run, walk, run, walk etc. In the four weeks leading up to the marathon I managed a couple more short runs (5K) but found that my fitness had deteriorated immensely. By that time everybody at my workplace knew I was running the marathon and I had already raised over £1000 in sponsorship…..there was no way I was going to pull out.

With just a couple of weeks to go, I made another big schoolboy error. I decided to go out and buy myself a nice new pair of running shoes for my big day! The night before the marathon everyone I knew was sending me messages of good luck…you must be crazy…don’t get beaten by a Rhino etc. I had never felt so nervous in my life. Age Concern organised a pasta party the night before and I couldn’t eat a thing or talk to any one of the 100 or so runners that were there. Everyone seemed as though they had been running for years…they had all the kit and were eating massive bowls of pasta like there was no tomorrow. I left very early and went to sleep hoping that the event would be called off due to bad weather, earthquake..anything!

I woke up in the morning at 6am and got ready to board our coach to take us to the start line at Blackheath. After standing for about two hours freezing my socks off the start hooter was let off and the 2001 London Marathon began. The atmosphere was amazing…30000 people all running for various causes in a variety of guises and costumes. It took about 15 minutes for me to able to start running due to the number of people but once I got moving, the butterflies had gone and all I could do was soak up the atmosphere. After about three miles I decided to stop for a loo break…a big mistake as I already stared to feel my legs tightening up. I picked up a drink at every opportunity and by the time I had reach 9 miles, I had probably had 5 or 6 loo breaks. My body was just not used to taking on and using so much water in such a short space of time and I had already started to walk…run…walk…run and many runners had

Speakers discuss success and Olympics 2012

July 28th, 2010 No comments

As the 2 year countdown kicks off across the UK the world’s medal-hopefuls are gearing up for the start of the London 2012 Olympics and construction of the site is well underway.  Kevin McCloud has already been busy taking a peep and has spied a “hint of awe-inspiring architecture” amid the numerous challenges that lie ahead.  Zaha Hadid’s Aquatics Centre – titled the ‘Pringle’ thus far to the organisers’ slight consternation – may turn out to be the architectural star of the sh

ow especially when Danny Boyle works his magic as Artistic Director at the opening ceremony, but who will be the sporting stars?  Will there be another rising talent like Amy Williams’ incredible gold medal victory at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, or will ‘veteran’ Sir Chris Hoy be the one to watch in the cycling velodrome – and while we’re at it what makes such a sporting success story, and what can we mere mortals learn from their journey?

Chairman of the London Organising Committee

of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) and keynote speaker Lord Sebastian Coe has learnt more than a thing or two as a double Olympic champion and chairman of the successful Olympic bid.  In business, sport, and politics he values the importance of healthy competition, passion, and the need to surround himself with people smarter than he is.  As he says, “I work long hours and often have to make tough choices between work and family life, but so does everyone.  We’re all in this together and share a

vision that we understand.”  This level of teamwork and leadership is also emphasised by Olympic gold medal winner Sir Matthew Pinsent, whose coach Jurgen Grobler outlined the 5 key factors which could lead to his victory with Sir Steve Redgrave in the coxless pair and the 5 that could cost them the gold medal prior to the final in Athens – a medal which they went on to win.  Matthew highlights the point that people too often ignore problems and do not communicate honestly within a team which can leave gaping holes in any aim for victory, and just as Justin Hughes has expressed in his work with the Red Arrows, the need to debrief honestly and openly in an uncritical environment where your ego is left at the door is essential.

Talent alone is also not enough and we may believe that such Olympians are extraordinary individuals whose achievements are far beyond us, when in fact they may be ordinary individuals who take extraordinary measures on their path to succeed.  Matthew Syed’s new book praised across the sporting world by talents from Mike Atherton to Jonathan Edwards describes in detail how and why champions ‘choke’ under pressure and critically, uses neuroscientific research to show how practice and preparation may be far more important than any perceived ‘innate’ talent.  Sir Clive Woodward who is Director of Elite Performance for the British Olympic Association emphasises that talent without huge levels of discipline will not achieve success, “It’s not only about skills.  It’s about attitude and the effect on the team.  One wrong player can sap all the energy from the group.”  As he says, “You can change the world in 4 years” and Clive can show you how.

In his research Matthew also details the importance of motivation and desire – illustrated by Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson who used calls for her retirement to spur her on to train even harder and win 4 gold medals at the Sydney Paralympics – as well as the potency of beliefs, whether rational or otherwise.  Just like Muhammed Ali, gold-medal winning triple jumper Jonathan Edwards CBE credited his faith for his success despite having very different religious beliefs to Ali – the point was not the content of the belief but simply its potency.  Edwards who now sees himself as an atheist says, “looking back now I can see that faith was pivotal to my success…even if the belief is fallacious.”

Current findings would therefore seem to suggest that whether in the world of sport or business, success and achievement may rely more heavily on practice and training than was initially thought, and not only training harder but more importantly training smarter – and in order to do this we need the right help.  Unfortunately the excuse that “I’m just no good at that” may be to some extent simply that, an excuse, when we realise that although we may initially find something very difficult, with the combination of long hours of practice – and critically the right trainin

Yosemite Hikes – Yosemite National Park embraces a spectacular tract of the mountain-and-valley scenery in the Sierra Nevada. It highlights of the park include Yosemite Valley, and its high cliffs and waterfalls; Wawona’s history center and historic hotel; the Mariposa Grove, which contains hundreds of ancient giant sequoias; Glacier Point’s (summer-fall) spectacular view of Yosemite Valley and the high country; Tuolumne Meadows (Summer), a large subalpine meadow surrounded by mountain

peaks; and Hetch Hetchy, a reservoir in a valley considered a twin of Yosemite Valley.

Yosemite National Park is our country’s most famed national treasure, rich in both history and beauty. It’s got dozens of matchless meadows and more than a hundred lakes, plus waterfalls as tall as a 200-story building, trees the size of rocket ships, mountains the size of – well, mountains – and even a few beaches. It’s bigger than a handful of European countries and almost the size of Rhode Island.

t also has more than 800 miles of trails, and you’re likely to expend lots of your Yosemite vacation wandering on them. Whether you prefer paved ways that never take you beyond shouting distance of a restaurant (a perfectly respectable approach) or remote paths where man has never before set foot (except perhaps to build the trail you’re on), you’ll find it here.

thusiastic day hike. The National Park Service estimates a descent of 3,200 feet that takes six hours to complete. The trail is not all downhill. However, and hikers who attempt the Panorama Trail should be aware that it’s strenuous, specifically in winter when the route receives considerable snow. Late spring and early summer offer the best days for hiking the Panorama Trail: snow melted provides ample water sources along the trail and swells the rivers and waterfalls, which are at their peak at that time of a year.

The Panorama Trail starts with a series of downhill switchbacks. The Merced River and its two waterfalls, Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls, are shortly in view, and the more secluded but thundering Illilouette Falls becomes visible soon after. Half Dome is never out of sight, but it’s well-known face quickly disappears, giving way to views of the dome and saddle. Other noteworthy landmarks are Mount Starr King, Liberty Cap, and North Dome, which can be seen throughout the descent to Illilouette Creek. At the Panorama Trail 2-mile mark, a footbridge crosses Illilouette Creek, and hikers begin an 800-foot ascent over roughly 1.5 miles of switchbacks across the Panorama Cliffs.

Visitors to Yosemite National Park who wants to see more than just. What’s on the valley floor should plan to hike the Panorama Trail? This trail lives up to its name, and its unequalled views of Yosemite National Park landmarks will leave a lasting impression.
