Datsyuk, who Babcock said is Detroit’s best faceoff winner, says he feels fine. He even tried to downplay not taking draws by stating, “I’m not good at faceoffs.”

There’s no denying Franzen’s injury, however.

Babcock was asked on Sunday night about his availability for Game 6 and said it will be up to Franzen to decide whether he’s healthy enough. Modano has only played one other playoff game this postseason — Game 4 against the Phoenix Coyotes — and the Westland, Mich., native is anxious to contribute more in his first postseason as a Red Wing.

“There’s a calmness,” second-year goalie Jimmy Howard said of Detroit’s mood when falling behind 3-0 in the series. “There’s a lot of experience in our dressing room and when your leaders have been through a lot, you just look to them. When you see (Lidstrom’s) face and see how calm he is, it just trickles down.”

That might be the inspiration behind the confident talk from Babcock and Holland, hoping it seeps down into the locker room. None of the Red Wings players were quite as brazen, but at least Datsyuk had a humorous spin on it.

There will be a balance between good and bad and there will be a very — I don’t want to say stern –reminder that an emotional letdown and a lack of professionalism will not allow us to advance in Game 4.”

“Maybe in Game 2 we were riding a little bit high,” Setoguchi said. “We got knocked down a peg or two there.”

The Sharks have had two poor starts in a row. They fell behind 2-0 in the first period of Game 2 when the Kings got power-play goals from Jack Johnson and Drew Doughty.

They gave up goals to Willie Mitchell and Kyle Clifford 13 seconds apart in the first 2:39 of Tuesday’s game, and Brad Richardson’s goal 44 seconds into the second period gave the Kings what appeared to be a commanding 4-0 lead.

Rather than panic, calm heads prevailed in the Sharks locker room Tuesday during each of the first two intermissions.

“It was just calm, to be honest with you,” team captain Joe Thornton said Wednesday. “It was really, ‘We know we have a great chance here to do something special.’ Everybody kind of took some deep breaths and getting some energy back into their system and getting ready to go.”

McLellan said that yelling and screaming at players wouldn’t have accomplished anything.

“Between the first and second period we went in the locker room,” he said. “We talked a little bit about our effort and about our commitment level, which I actually thought was higher than what it was in Game 2. We talked about how the game could evolve by scoring one (goal) and getting them to tighten up and we went from there.

“Between the second and third we basically left them alone. We said, ‘It’s in their hands now. This is a really abnormal game. They have some momentum, let’s leave them alone.’ I think it starts with your captain. He was vocal between periods and was saying the right things.”

Thornton’s calming words helped settle younger players like Logan Couture, who scored one of the Sharks’ five second-period goals.

“It was just a feeling that someone was going to step up and score that big goal for us,” he said. “We dug ourselves a hole, but there was a long way to go. It was good to he

Why is it different this year you ask?  For one thing the Board of Govenors met this spring and realize that the penalties must be called and since that meeting my guess is game ejections and penalties are

both up.  No more violent hits to key players or any player in the league.

That offers the players the freedom to move a little easier and puts the breaks on any player or team that thinks it is the same old game in 2011′.  Seven or eight penalties to one team will cost them the series, if it happens game after game. 

The other dynamic is face book and twitter and you tube and the access they all offer to instant information. The great play from the evening before, that resulted in a go

As the players tweet to their girl friends on the way to the rink, the girl friends are sending videos to them of them scoring from a week ago, each player is connected.  The players are smarter as a result and they can react in a day, and sometimes in a shift.The key to winning the Stanley Cup in 2011′ will be the team that scores the most unintended goals.  It means shoot in traffic, don’t wait, shoot toward the goal from every angle. If you can swing your stick hard enough to have the puck go to the net with speed and direct intent, shoot.  A pro hockey player can have a wrist shot on less than 4 inches of ice space. Shelley has seen both sides of the rivalry, having ended the 2009-10 season with the Rangers prior to signing with the Flyers last summer.

 

Being with the Rangers last season, however, meant Shelley was part of one of the most memorable games in the teams’ rivalry — last season’s regular-season finale in Philadelphia. Shelley scored the Rangers’ lone goal in that one; however, Matt Carle scored in the third to tie it, and then Giroux scored the shootout winner. Coincidentally, Giroux and Shelley are next-door neighbors in the Flyers’ locker room at the Wells Fargo Center.

 

That final-day win propelled the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Final, while Shelley got an unwanted early start to his summer.

 

“It was a pretty special moment for the whole team,” said Giroux. “It was pretty exciting. Going back to the last game, the shootout, you dream about that, to be able to be the guy in the shootout. It was pretty special.”
