How to Improve Your Hockey skills

May 14th, 2010 No comments

Skates that are used in hockey are made to withstand much more abuse than those used in figure skating, making them more expensive and more bulky. Besides is not only thing that is different between these two types of skates. People sometimes overlook the fact that there are real players out there, who play for the love of the game and the intellectual challenge that comes with it.A few will do their goalie stretches plus some hand eye reaction/juggling work as well. It is this type of s

This will load your stick with a lot of flex. Many hockey enthusiasts of all levels have much better slap shots and wrist shots than they had years ago due to the popularity of composite hockey sticks. But with the pickup of Ian White in the Toronto deal the Flames no longer had interest in Gilroy so the Rangers put Christopher Higgins in the package. While being fast in a straight line is important, it’s your ability to move laterally with speed and power that will allow you to separate yourself from your check and get more opportunities to score. As the game continues to become faster and even more physical, players cannot rely on skill alone. They need to develop their hockey sense and understand where the space is on the ice and how to use it effectively. It is advised that they remain in the best state when they are removed from bag. It is also better that you loosen the laces and pull the tounge out so that the drying process takes place quickly. The right hockey skates make all the difference in the world to the player on the ice. They help to keep the player upright and gliding around like it is effortless.

Your Old Hockey Equipment, Valuable to You And Others

May 10th, 2010 No comments

You love to play hockey right.  Lets say you play Roller hockey and not Ice hockey for minute.  Do you think that when it’s time for new Hockey gear, Your old hockey equipment is now useless?  Guess what, hockey player? It most definitely is not.  In fact, if it is not useful to you anymore, it is probably going to be useful to someone else.  There are a whole bunch of hockey monkeys out there that need equipment and can’t afford it.

That’s right, you can sell your old hockey g

ear.   Not only can you sell your sports gear, you can trade it for newer sports stuff and discounts as well.  Alot of people wouldn’t mind buying your year old Reebok Hockey Skates and replacing the bearings and wheels in them.  Hell, after they do that, those things will almost be as good as new.  Its true that the used skates might not be the best hockey skates, but they’ll be close to being the best.

Remember, in the sport of hockey you will only be as good as your equipment allows.

So what if you have a year old pair of skates and other gear.  A year ago it might’ve been the best thing out there that money could buy.  Most good hockey gear usually lasts awhile too.  So the newer the used equipment is, the better it will be for you, the hockey player.  Who cares what other people on your team may think, their new equipment may not even be as good as yours.  Remember, old equipment can sometimes beat out newer cheap equipment.

There are plenty of places that allow

you to trade this stuff in.  Most of them are your local sports stores.  I don’t currently know of any online hockey stores that allow this.  The closest thing I can think of is an online auction site that would allow used sporting equipment.  So if you want to get those new RBK11s from Reebok Hockey, you may want to trade in your old hockey equipment first.

NHL – History of Chicago Blackhawks

April 22nd, 2010 No comments

There are a number of great Hockey teams that make up the National Hockey League, and each of them has a rich history of tradition and loyalty.  One of these teams is the Chicago Blackhawks.  The Blackhawks are a team based out of Chicago, IL, and they currently play in the Central Division of the Western Conference.  The Chicago Blackhawks have had a history of winning ever since they have been in the NHL.  They have won a total of 14 division titles and three Stanley Cups during th

eir existence.  They, along with five others, make up the original six teams of the NHL and play in the United Center in Chicago.  Previous to now, they played all of their home games at the Chicago Center but have since improved their playing facilities.

The history of the Chicago Blackhawks goes all the way back to their inception in 1926.  They were a part of the first expansion and they were first owned by Frederic McLaughlin who had made his fortune in the sales of coffee.  He had serv

Some of the Blackhawk’s best years came in the 1930’s where they won the Stanley Cup in both 1934 and also 1938. Their goalie at the time of the first championship (Charlie Gardiner) was voted the best goalie in the NHL.  In 1938 the team was led by goa

lie Mike Karakas and defenseman Earl Seibert, and they beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in order to secure their second national championship. About six years later they would again advance to the Stanley Cup Finals only to be ousted by the Montreal Canadiens.  That year they would have their famous “pony line” composed of future Hall of Famers Doug Bentley, Mark Bentley, and Bill Mosienko.  They were nicknamed the “pony line” because they were small but they were all quick.

After the 1944 trip to the finals the Blackhawks dropped out of serious contention for almost 17 years.  During this period of time they only went to the post season four times, and frequently placed dead last in their division.   The only real shining moments were Al Rollins’ and Max Bentley’s Hart memorial trophies.

In 1961, the Blackhawks pulled it together and won another championship with the help of teammates Glenn Hall, Pierre Pilote, Bobby Hull, and Stan Mikita.  Since that time, Chicago has been one of the steadiest teams in the NHL and have consistently made it to the playoffs.  Some notable players during this time period were Denis Savard and Doug Wilson in the eighties and Ed Belfour and Chris Chelios in the nineties.

The Chicago Blackhawks are continuing to try and relive their days of NHL glory from the thirties and the sixties and look to have a good shot at rebuilding the team and getting back into that kind of position.

History Of Montreal Canadiens Franchise

April 17th, 2010 No comments

The Montreal Canadiens were founded on December 4th, 1909 by J. Ambrose O’Brien as a member of the National Hockey Association (NHA).  The NHA was the forerunner to the National Hockey League (NHL).  The team was to be the team of the francophone community in Montreal and was to be comprised of francophone players and to be owned by francophone ownership.

The Montreal Canadiens had a horrible first season and they placed dead last in the association.  After the very first year, th

One year later, the Canadiens joined with four other teams to form the NHL.  The Montreal Canadiens won their first NHL Stanley Cup during the 1923-1924 season, and the team was led by Howie Morenz.  The team then moved to the Montreal Forum for the 1926-1927 season.

ayers joined the Canadiens team.

The Canadiens had some golden years in the 1940’s led by Maurice “Rocket” Richard, Toe Blake, and Elmer Lach.  From 1952 to 1950, the team won six Stanley Cups, including 5 that they won in a row from 1956 to 1960.  These years had a large amount of stars which included: Jean Beliveau, Dickie Moore, Doug Harvey, Bernie “Boom Boom” Geoffrion, Jacques Plante, and Henri.

From 1965 to 1979 the Canadiens added ten more championships.  They also had another four straight Cups from 1976 to 1979.  This team also set a record in 1976 for the fewest losses by only losing 8 games in the 80 game season.  The 70’s brought some amazing stars which included: Guy Lafleur, Yvan Cournoyer, Ken Dryden, Pete Mahovlich, Steve Shutt, Bob Gainey, Serge Savard, Guy Lapointe, and Larry Robinson.  Scotty Bowman was the coach and later set a record for the most NHL victories by a coach.

Another Stanley Cup was won in 1986, led by the rookie star goaltender Patrick Roy.  They also won another Cup in 1993 which continued their streak of at least winning one championship in every decade since 1910.  In 1996 the team stopped playing in the Montreal Forum and now plays in the Bell Centre.

Recently, on December 29, 2008 the Canadiens beat the Florida Panthers to become the first team in NHL history to reach over 3,000 victories. The team also retired several uniform numbers before hosting the 2009 NHL All-Star Game.  They also hosted the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Hockey players that are focused on winning have perfected a game full of harassment, hassle which of course aims to getting the puck off the opposition, rather than letting them keep possession, it sometimes may not be pretty but ice hockey is a physical g

Time marches on and so does the game of ice hockey, becoming more and more popular in the UK and more men and woman yearning to enter into this most competitive sport, do it, if that is what you want, but make sure that you choose a provider of equipment that will be the ‘b’ all and end all of your search, the only option is Crazy Kenny’s.

Last 10: Boston 6-4-0; Washington 6-1-3

Season series: Third of four meetings — the Bruins must pay two visits to the Verizon Center in the span of seven days to conclude the regular season. Washington won twice in Boston earlier this season by identical 4-1 scores. Alex Ovechkin and Brooks Laich each scored twice for the Capitals on opening night and added goals in the most recent matchup on Feb. 2.

Then again, the Capitals have yet to see Tuukka Rask this season, as Tim Thomas started the previous two meetings. Rask leads the League in both goals-against average (1.96) and save percentage (.931) and should be a lock to start Monday.

you would expect for a team that doesn’t give up many goals but has also averaged the fewest goals per game in the League. Boston has scored just three times in its last three games, but won two of those games in overtime. Rask has allowed just two goals in 187 minutes over that span. He shut out New Jersey, lost 1-0 to Florida and most recently turned aside 27 of 28 shots in a 2-1 win Saturday in Toronto. Miroslav Satan scored his second of the game with 1:35 left in the extra period.

It’s an urgency to produce and to get as many points as we can. They probably wanted to spoil this game for us and we’re happy that we got another two points. It looks a little better for us after today.”

Capitals: The final week of the regular season for Washington will be about getting everyone back healthy, playing good hockey heading into the playoffs and checking the standings to find out who wins the battle for the eighth seed and becomes the Capitals’ first-round opponent. They come into this game off one-goal victories over Atlanta and Columbus. Jose Theodore made 34 saves against the Blue Jackets to improve to 18-0-3 since Jan. 12.

“I’ve been feeling pretty good about my game the past few months — as good as I’ve felt in many years,” Theodore said.

Who’s hot: David Krejci has five goals and 11 assists in his last 13 games for the Bruins. Zdeno Chara has two goals and four assists in his last seven games. Rask owns a .949 save percentage over his last seven appearances.

Alexander Semin has six goals in his last seven games for the Capitals and his 38 for the season tie a career high. Mike Green has two goals and an assist during a three-game points streak.

Injury report: Boston defenseman Dennis Seidenberg suffered a skate laceration to his left wrist Saturday but got stitched up and should be able to play Monday. Fellow blueliner Mark Stuart (hand) and forward Shawn Thornton (upper body) are considered day-to-day. Defenseman Andrew Ference (groin) is out indefinitely. Forward Marc Savard (concussion) is on injured reserve.

Washington defenseman Milan Jurcina is out indefinitely following sports hernia surgery, but defenseman John Carlson (upper body) and forwards Brendan Morrison (lower body), Scott Walker (knee) and Boyd Gordon (back) are all close to returning.

Selanne Becomes 18Th Member Of 600-Goal Club

April 4th, 2010 No comments

Selanne became the 18th player in NHL history to reach the milestone, scoring 34 seconds into the second period during a power play in the Anaheim Ducks’ 5-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday night.

“I was a little nervous that if it didn’t happen tonight, it might not happen here at all,” Selanne said. “It’s great, but it’s way more special happening at home. So I’m very happy about that. It was a big relief for me, for sure.”

Selanne is the fourth player to reac

All but one member of the 600-goal club have joined that exclusive fraternity since Nov. 23, 1988, when Wayne Gretzky got the ball rolling just four days before the 23rd anniversary of Gordie Howe’s 600th.

“There are only 17 other guys that have done it before, and it’s a very unique, special group,” Selanne said. “You need a lot of luck, hard work and great players to play with. I have had a

The 39-year-old right wing from Finland, playing his 16th NHL season, scored on his fifth shot of the game while John-Michael Liles was off for hooking Matt Beleskey.

“He’s a great guy, and we definitely were pulling for him,” teammate Scott Niedermayer said. “There was an underlying feeling when you’re on the ice with him. You want to at least give him the opportunity. He knows how to score goals.”

e the blue line, then thwarted Corey Perry’s rebound attempt. But the Avalanche defense couldn’t clear the puck, and Selanne slammed his 21st goal of the season into a wide-open net before Anderson could scramble back to the crease.

“I guess that was the easiest I’ve had in a while,” Selanne said. “I was just hoping that the puck was going to bounce to me, and it did. I’ve had a lot of chances the last three games, but nothing went in. Then you get one of those.

“It’s amazing the way my teammates have been feeding me the puck. I think they wanted this more than I did. Obviously, it’s a great feeling, and I don’t have to think about it anymore.”

Anderson became the 133rd goalie that Selanne has scored against in the regular season. Selanne’s first NHL goal came against San Jose’s Jeff Hackett on Oct. 8, 1992.

“I remember that like it was yesterday — Cow Palace against the Sharks,” Selanne said. “There have been a lot of goals between 1 and 600. Time is flying. It’s unbelievable how fast it goes. If somebody would have told me at that time that that I was going to score 600 goals in this league, I would call the doctor.”

Selanne is the Ducks’ leader with 373 goals, most of them with Paul Kariya as his linemate. The latest milestone came just three days after Kariya got his 400th goal.

“I texted him after that game and told him: ‘Maybe I’ll get my 600th soon, too,’” Selanne said. “Numbers-wise, I had my best years here with Paul and we helped each other so much. Not very often can you find the same chemistry that we had. It was amazing, and they were great memories.”

Jonas Hiller finished with 26 saves after Jason Blake and Beleskey helped stake him to a 4-0 lead with first-period goals. Blake’s came on a power play, as did Ryan Getzlaf’s 19th goal in the third period. Rookie Troy Bodie got his first career short-handed goal at 12:45 of the second period, chasing Anderson to the bench.

Darcy Tucker and former Ducks defenseman Ruslan Salei scored third-period goals for the Avalanche. Salei and Selanne were teammate in Anaheim for five-plus seasons.

“Unfortunately it was against us — but, yes, I’m happy for him,” Salei said. “It’s a huge milestone. I want to congratulate him — and I did on the ice.”

NOTES: Selanne also was on the winning side when he scored his 100th, 200th, 300th and 400th NHL goals. But the Ducks lost 3-2 at Colorado in a shootout when he got his 500th goal on Nov. 22, 2006. … Selanne’s 648 career assists, including the one he had on Getzlaf’s goal, are the second fewest among players who have scored 600 goals. Bobby Hull had only 560 — but son Brett finished with just two more than Selanne has now. … Selanne had 16 goals during his one season with the Avalanche (2003-04). … Selanne, Luc Robitaille and Mario Lemieux are the only players ever to score 600 goals after winning the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. … Paul Stastny failed to get a point for the first time i

3D Network Hockey Game Launched By Msg

March 28th, 2010 No comments

Hockey may never be the same after a 3-D telecast was produced and aired on March 24, 2010. The NHL partnered with MSG to deliver the Islanders/Rangers game in 3D all from the Madison Square Garden. It was the first 3D network hockey game to have ever been produced. MSG is one of the industry leaders in delivering up-to-date and current technology for viewers. They have a reputation for being on the cutting edge of the industry ever since 1998 when they were also the first to provide sp

orts games in High Definition.  They first did this by producing Rangers and Knicks home games in HD.

The 3D broadcast started with a pre-game viewing party at the Madison Square Garden Theater. In this special party there were many former Rangers players that came including Ron Duguay, Nick Fotiu, Dan Blackburn, Mark Messier, and many others. They also had some giveaways and contests to keep the fans happy. The telecast was shown on a Cablevision channel as well as a few other providers. Tic

The way that the game was captured was through the use of technology that captures video in 3D imagery. ing off.

The president of MSG media, Michael Bair, talked about how MSG has always been a leader in new technology and that it makes sense that they would extend it into 3-D TV.  He talked about their initial plunge into the High Definition scene and how that has helped pave the way for them to continue with their innovative traditions.  MSG has plans to completely renovate the building they are in to make the arena a better experience for all who come there to enjoy sporting events. This remodeling venture looks to completely re-outfit the arena from top to bottom and do even more to help the trainers and athletes who will be performing.  This new facility should be the new standard for arenas and will be packed with all of the newest technology that the world has to offer.

The truth of the matter is that 3D telecasting has the potential to completely change the way we watch sports. High Definition Television did this just a few years back, and the way that technology is improving it makes sense that it would be time for another jump.  3D is becoming more of a mainstream thing and as it continues to pick up popularity there will be more demand for games in this type of setting.  There are still a few bugs to be worked out when it comes to 3D technology, but there is a good chance it will soon be the standard viewing method for sports fanatics everywhere.
