There are a number of great Hockey teams that make up the National Hockey League, and each of them has a rich history of tradition and loyalty.  One of these teams is the Chicago Blackhawks.  The Blackhawks are a team based out of Chicago, IL, and they currently play in the Central Division of the Western Conference.  The Chicago Blackhawks have had a history of winning ever since they have been in the NHL.  They have won a total of 14 division titles and three Stanley Cups during th

eir existence.  They, along with five others, make up the original six teams of the NHL and play in the United Center in Chicago.  Previous to now, they played all of their home games at the Chicago Center but have since improved their playing facilities.

The history of the Chicago Blackhawks goes all the way back to their inception in 1926.  They were a part of the first expansion and they were first owned by Frederic McLaughlin who had made his fortune in the sales of coffee.  He had serv

ed in World War I, and often times his team was referred to as the “Blackhawk Division”.  They were nicknamed this after a Native American named Chief Black Hawk.  The name stuck and McLaughlin eventually named the hockey team after that.

Some of the Blackhawk’s best years came in the 1930’s where they won the Stanley Cup in both 1934 and also 1938. Their goalie at the time of the first championship (Charlie Gardiner) was voted the best goalie in the NHL.  In 1938 the team was led by goa

lie Mike Karakas and defenseman Earl Seibert, and they beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in order to secure their second national championship. About six years later they would again advance to the Stanley Cup Finals only to be ousted by the Montreal Canadiens.  That year they would have their famous “pony line” composed of future Hall of Famers Doug Bentley, Mark Bentley, and Bill Mosienko.  They were nicknamed the “pony line” because they were small but they were all quick.

After the 1944 trip to the finals the Blackhawks dropped out of serious contention for almost 17 years.  During this period of time they only went to the post season four times, and frequently placed dead last in their division.   The only real shining moments were Al Rollins’ and Max Bentley’s Hart memorial trophies.

In 1961, the Blackhawks pulled it together and won another championship with the help of teammates Glenn Hall, Pierre Pilote, Bobby Hull, and Stan Mikita.  Since that time, Chicago has been one of the steadiest teams in the NHL and have consistently made it to the playoffs.  Some notable players during this time period were Denis Savard and Doug Wilson in the eighties and Ed Belfour and Chris Chelios in the nineties.

The Chicago Blackhawks are continuing to try and relive their days of NHL glory from the thirties and the sixties and look to have a good shot at rebuilding the team and getting back into that kind of position.

The Montreal Canadiens were founded on December 4th, 1909 by J. Ambrose O’Brien as a member of the National Hockey Association (NHA).  The NHA was the forerunner to the National Hockey League (NHL).  The team was to be the team of the francophone community in Montreal and was to be comprised of francophone players and to be owned by francophone ownership.

The Montreal Canadiens had a horrible first season and they placed dead last in the association.  After the very first year, th

e ownership was transferred to George Kennedy of Montreal and the team started performing much better over the next few seasons.  The team won its first Stanley Cup championship in the 1915-1916 season. One year later, the Canadiens joined with four other teams to form the NHL.  The Montreal Canadiens won their first NHL Stanley Cup during the 1923-1924 season, and the team was led by Howie Morenz.  The team then moved to the Montreal Forum for the 1926-1927 season.

The team started off th

e 1930’s with success by winning the Stanley Cups in 1930 and 1931.  After these years of winning, the club started to decline on the ice as well as with the economy at the time.  The financial losses grew to the point where the team owners were thinking about selling the team to Cleveland, Ohio investors.  As these talks were going on, local investors were found which ended up keeping the team in Montreal.  At this same time, the Montreal Maroons ended up shutting down and many of these pl

ayers joined the Canadiens team.

The Canadiens had some golden years in the 1940’s led by Maurice “Rocket” Richard, Toe Blake, and Elmer Lach.  From 1952 to 1950, the team won six Stanley Cups, including 5 that they won in a row from 1956 to 1960.  These years had a large amount of stars which included: Jean Beliveau, Dickie Moore, Doug Harvey, Bernie “Boom Boom” Geoffrion, Jacques Plante, and Henri.

From 1965 to 1979 the Canadiens added ten more championships.  They also had another four straight Cups from 1976 to 1979.  This team also set a record in 1976 for the fewest losses by only losing 8 games in the 80 game season.  The 70’s brought some amazing stars which included: Guy Lafleur, Yvan Cournoyer, Ken Dryden, Pete Mahovlich, Steve Shutt, Bob Gainey, Serge Savard, Guy Lapointe, and Larry Robinson.  Scotty Bowman was the coach and later set a record for the most NHL victories by a coach.

Another Stanley Cup was won in 1986, led by the rookie star goaltender Patrick Roy.  They also won another Cup in 1993 which continued their streak of at least winning one championship in every decade since 1910.  In 1996 the team stopped playing in the Montreal Forum and now plays in the Bell Centre.

Recently, on December 29, 2008 the Canadiens beat the Florida Panthers to become the first team in NHL history to reach over 3,000 victories. The team also retired several uniform numbers before hosting the 2009 NHL All-Star Game.  They also hosted the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Capitals: The final week of the regular season for Washington will be about getting everyone back healthy, playing good hockey heading into the playoffs and checking the standings to find out who wins the battle for the eighth seed and becomes the Capitals’ first-round opponent. They come into this game off one-goal victories over Atlanta and Columbus. Jose Theodore made 34 saves against the Blue Jackets to improve to 18-0-3 since Jan. 12.

“I’ve been feeling pretty good about my game the past few months — as good as I’ve felt in many years,” Theodore said.

Who’s hot: David Krejci has five goals and 11 assists in his last 13 games for the Bruins. Zdeno Chara has two goals and four assists in his last seven games. Rask owns a .949 save percentage over his last seven appearances.

Selanne became the 18th player in NHL history to reach the milestone, scoring 34 seconds into the second period during a power play in the Anaheim Ducks’ 5-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday night.

“I was a little nervous that if it didn’t happen tonight, it might not happen here at all,” Selanne said. “It’s great, but it’s way more special happening at home. So I’m very happy about that. It was a big relief for me, for sure.”

h the milestone in the last four seasons, along with Jaromir Jagr, Brendan Shanahan and Joe Sakic. All but one member of the 600-goal club have joined that exclusive fraternity since Nov. 23, 1988, when Wayne Gretzky got the ball rolling just four days before the 23rd anniversary of Gordie Howe’s 600th.

“There are only 17 other guys that have done it before, and it’s a very unique, special group,” Selanne said. “You need a lot of luck, hard work and great players to play with. I have had a

“I guess that was the easiest I’ve had in a while,” Selanne said. “I was just hoping that the puck was going to bounce to me, and it did. I’ve had a lot of chances the last three games, but nothing went in. Then you get one of those.

“It’s amazing the way my teammates have been feeding me the puck. I think they wanted this more than I did. Obviously, it’s a great feeling, and I don’t have to think about it anymore.”

Anderson became the 133rd goalie that Selanne has scored against in the regular season. Selanne’s first NHL goal came against San Jose’s Jeff Hackett on Oct. 8, 1992.

“I remember that like it was yesterday — Cow Palace against the Sharks,” Selanne said. “There have been a lot of goals between 1 and 600. Time is flying. It’s unbelievable how fast it goes. If somebody would have told me at that time that that I was going to score 600 goals in this league, I would call the doctor.”

Selanne is the Ducks’ leader with 373 goals, most of them with Paul Kariya as his linemate. The latest milestone came just three days after Kariya got his 400th goal.

“I texted him after that game and told him: ‘Maybe I’ll get my 600th soon, too,’” Selanne said. “Numbers-wise, I had my best years here with Paul and we helped each other so much. Not very often can you find the same chemistry that we had. It was amazing, and they were great memories.”

Jonas Hiller finished with 26 saves after Jason Blake and Beleskey helped stake him to a 4-0 lead with first-period goals. Blake’s came on a power play, as did Ryan Getzlaf’s 19th goal in the third period. Rookie Troy Bodie got his first career short-handed goal at 12:45 of the second period, chasing Anderson to the bench.

Darcy Tucker and former Ducks defenseman Ruslan Salei scored third-period goals for the Avalanche. Salei and Selanne were teammate in Anaheim for five-plus seasons.

“Unfortunately it was against us — but, yes, I’m happy for him,” Salei said. “It’s a huge milestone. I want to congratulate him — and I did on the ice.”

The truth of the matter is that 3D telecasting has the potential to completely change the way we watch sports.
