After reviewing amazing players such as Kobe Bryant and Moses Malone in our previous article, now it is time to list our top five scorers in the history of the NBA, let’s start with Shaq.

Shaquille O’Neal: The Steel has said goodbye to the National Basketball Association, and during his long, amazing career, he managed to score an incredible 28,596 points with an average of 23 points per game and earned four championship rings, maybe Kobe will make it fifth on the list after n

Wilt Chamberlain: He is the only player that has managed to average forty points during a single season, though he also has one season in his career in which he averaged 50 points per game. He played for the Warriors, Sixers and the Lakers, and retired with a total of 31,419 points, averaging 30.1 points per game.

Michael Jordan: Considered by some as the best athlete of all time, Jordan played for the Bulls during the first two stints of his career and with the Washington Wizard

s on his third one. He managed to earn five MVP awards and six NBA titles. Jordan finished his career with an outstanding 32,292 points in a total of 1072 matches with an average of 30.12 points per game.

Karl Malone: Know as the mailman, he was truly a consistent player who wasn’t able to earn a single NBA title, making it to the finals two times, where Jordan and the Chicago Bulls beat them. But on the personal side, Malone managed to score more points than Jordan during his career, with a

total of 36,928 points in 1476 matches, averaging 25 points per game in nineteen seasons at the league.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Known as Lew Alcindor when he started his career at the NBA, he is undoubtedly the best scorer of all time. He played for seventeen seasons, in which he managed to score 38,387 points in a total of 1560 games, averaging 24.6 points, the 14th best record of all time. He scored a total of six titles and earned six MVP awards.

This list will surely vary in the spots going from 10 to 6, but the first five will certainly remain for a long time, as just a handful of players such as LeBron James have proven capable of coming close to the numbers of guys like Abdul-Jabbar, Malone and Michael “Air” Jordan.

 

I like playing basketball just for fun, but I want to increase my vertical jump. Not because I have to make those shots, just for enjoyment of the game. What I found was that there were a lot of ways to build the muscles in my legs so that I had more power behind my jump. That was not all that was needed though. You can have a lot of strength and still have a not so good vertical jump.

I spent some time looking for other ways to increase my vertical jump. I found a couple of referenc

es that suggested stretches would help when used with those other strength building exercises that I was already doing. They suggested that having my legs limber was just as important as having them strong. Since I was already doing the exercises I didn’t see any real reason not to add the stretches along with them. They did help a little bit because I found that I hesitated less when attempting the jump. You know you set yourself up and tell yourself to go, but in the back of your mind you are

really hoping you don’t hurt yourself trying it. Adding the stretches took some of that fear away and did help to increase my vertical jump a little bit.

What made the biggest difference to increase my vertical jump was finding the right information that really pulled it all together. It takes more than just exercises and stretches to make a huge improvement. It also takes time, but more than that it takes drive to keep going. Finding the right materials that put it all together and showed m

e which exercises to do in which ways really honed my skills more than what I would have been able to do on my own. I spent some time in the pool lunging up out of the water for practice. I also set goals for my stretches. I did much better when I had a specific goal in mind, like being able to stretch far enough where touching my toes was not the least bit uncomfortable. Now I can place flat hands on the floor without it being uncomfortable at all. Having those goals and using the muscles for what I wanted them to do really made a huge difference in my performance, and I am much happier with the results I get on the basketball court too.

LeBron had no fire, no ferocity, no visible determination all night. He rarely attacked the basket, even with Jason Kidd guarding him, and settled for far too many jumpers. He was never a factor offensively, and was particularly damaging to the Heat when they needed someone other than Dwyane Wade to rescue them from a late Dallas comeback.

Eight points, his career playoff low, in 45 minutes. One shot and no points and two turnovers in the fourth quarter. Hmmm. Surely some

of you snickered, had a Cavaliers-Celtics flashback and wondered: Was his elbow hurting again?

“He was physically fine,” reported coach Erik Spoelstra.

Understand, this was not a career-defining moment for LeBron. Not when the series is 2-2 and with enough time left for a personal turnaround. It would be too easy and perhaps premature to suggest James isn’t cut out for this, although this morning, that will be the narrative anyway. One poor game doesn’t create a reputation. But string together a few more like this, and that changes everything.

Or rather, that means everything stays the same for LeBron, who came into this season and this championship series looking to convince the basketball world that he’s a winner.

Instead, he’s deferring offensively and therefore letting the Mavericks off the hook. He’s giving Wade the opportunity to win games, which is fine, since Wade had another sterling performance, with 32 slashing points. But James needs to strike a balance between facilitator and offensive beast. That balance was missing in Game 4 and, for the most part, all series.

“I think they haven’t changed their coverage on me,” he said. “Me just being more assertive, that’s what it’s all about. I can’t let that stop my aggression when they bring two (men) on the ball. I’ve still got to make (passes) but also make plays for myself to keep me in the rhythm of the game.”

LeBron missed eight of his 11 shots. At one point, the Heat offense didn’t even run through him anymore. It seemed his mind was already made up: He was done taking shots. An interesting scene took place Tuesday night. With Miami down two points and desperate for a basket, Wade heaved a cross-court pass to Mike Miller, rather than to LeBron at the key. (Miller lost the ball out of bounds. And the Heat were dead after that.) By ignoring his equally-talented teammate in a time of need, it was clear that Wade had completely lost confidence in LeBron, because LeBron, by then, had lost confidence in himself.

It wasn’t all about LeBron in the fourth quarter, although it seemed that way. Miller missed 3 of 4 shots. Mario Chalmers, unlike Game 3, didn’t make a shot. It was mostly Wade and little else.

If you want a loud, loquacious, opinionated, cage-rattling, authority-tweaking Cuban, you best dig up some footage of Fidel from 1959. As for the owner of the Mavericks, he isn’t saying anything. And that’s saying something. His team is in the NBA Finals, coming home for three games after sucking the siesta out of Miami, and The First Fan Of Dallas sure is picking a strange time to keep his thoughts to himself.

ublic utterance was in the aftermath of the Western Conference title conquest, when Cuban, wearing a championship cap turned backward, bellowed: “We’re not done yet!”

And yet, he’s done talking.

Nothing. Nary a tweet or a peep. He has stopped communicating. At this point, we stand a bet

Cuban waved off a chance to issue a State of the Cuban Address prior to Game 2. He said, extremely politely, “I’d rather not” and mentioned something about wanting to leave the spotlight on the teams. All he offered me, a fellow Pittsburgher, was a handshake and a smile that told me to move on. No joy for a homeboy.

Cuban isn’t discriminating, though. He’s stiffing everyone, politely, of course. Even himself. He hasn’t posted on “Blog Maverick,” his personal cyber-blackboard, since April 12. Before the playoffs. And he hasn’t spoken much, on the record anyway, to reporters ever since. This from an owner who rarely refuses a chance to promote the Mavericks, his pride and joy, his ticket to celebrity.

Well, I guess we can wait until the championship-clinching ceremony, if it happens for Dallas, because it would be worth it. There would be no cooler sight than Cuban accepting the trophy from David Stern, of all people. And try to picture Cuban’s immediate reaction at the buzzer should the Mavericks wrap this thing up. Would it be Tom Cruise again on Oprah’s couch? A Jim Valvano zig-zag through the chaos? A blood-curdling scream that’s so piercing and high, only referees can hear?

No matter what you may think of Cuban — and count me among his admirers — you can’t deny that he’s been good for basketball. Just like The Big Three of Miami has been good for basketball. Anything and anyone who gets people talking basketball and noticing basketball is good for basketball. There really is no debate about the owner in Dallas, where Cuban is approaching Jerry Jones for biggest Hoss. He can’t go wrong in this town, mainly because the Mavericks were the Cavaliers (post-LeBron) before he bought them.

His legendary energy has been his strength and weakness, as you know. Emotion has often gotten the best of Cuban, costing him thousands of dollars in fines and also any chance of getting a kiss from Kenyon Martin’s lips tattoo. A billionaire, he also turned cheap at the wrong time, when he refused to fork over $60 million for Steve Nash, who went to Phoenix and won some MVPs. And yet: Whether he’s been right or wrong, his heart has always been in the right place. Those who follow Cuban say he’s mellower since the birth of his children, but he’s still a constant presence around the Mavericks, either at home or on the road, always there to supply whatever coaches and players need.

In a sense, this is his job: Loving the Mavericks.

And perhaps because he loves the Mavericks, he’s decided to shut his yap and close his keyboard. Maybe he’d rather leave enough alone, considering the Mavericks are on a roll, sweeping aside the Lakers and brushing off the tumbleweeds from Oklahoma City and n

Ahead by 77-76, Thunder Coach Scott Brooks pulled Westbrook, a second-team all-N.B.A. guard, and three other starters, putting Game 2 in the hands of four reserves and Kevin Durant. What might be called a reckless gamble turned into a stroke of genius as as the series shifts to Oklahoma City for Game 3 Saturday night.

“If you tell me

they leave Westbrook out the whole fourth quarter and we don’t get stops to win, that would have been tough,” the Mavericks’ Dirk Nowitzki said. “Their bench changed the game. They killed us there in the fourth.”

Immediately afterward, Brooks was forced to defend his lineup decision, a situation made awkward mostly because of Westbrook’s vehement reaction toward his coach on the sideline. Westbrook scored 6 points on 3-of-7 shooting with one assist in the third quarter, but a late turnover, followed by a foul that put Jason Kidd on the free-throw line, caused Brooks to pull Westbrook with 28 seconds left.

“I’ve done it a few times during the year,” Brooks said. “It doesn’t happen often. Russell is an incredible player. He’s our starting point guard. But we weren’t getting a lot of things done, and his time was to come out, and I stayed with Eric. He was terrific handling the decisions on the court, and guys made big shots.”

Brooks considered putting Westbrook back in for the last six minutes. “I usually sub him in then,” Brooks said. “Very rarely have I ever done that since Russell has been here.”

Asked if it was difficult to watch from the bench, Westbrook said: “Not when we’re winning. I’m good. I’m just sitting there waiting to get my name called.”

His sour mood brightened quickly Thursday night. He encouraged his teammates and high-fived Harden after he shook off Jason Terry and drilled a jumper for a 10-point lead with 3 minutes 15 seconds to play.

“It was fine,” Westbrook said.

The postgame perception was that Brooks risked alienating Westbrook, if not dividing his locker room. Aside from Durant, the benched starters logged only 50 seconds in the fourth quarter.

Harden, whose 17 points were pivotal in the Thunder’s Game 7 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies last Sunday in the conference semifinals, battered the Mavericks with 23. Maynor, Westbrook’s backup, added 13 points as the Thunder bench outscored the Mavericks’ reserves by 50-29.

“Eric had our whole group going and had five guys on the floor all in sync and playing as one,” Durant said. “We had a good lead, and with three or four minutes to go, you can’t take those guys out.

“Russell understands that. He’s a perfect teammate. He was over there cheering everybody on, and from your leader that’s what you’d like to see if he was on the bench.”

Nowitzki pointed to Maynor and Harden as among the matchup predicaments the Mavericks must solve quickly. And now, Brooks has planted the seed that the Thunder is not afraid to gamble with adjustments.

“Defensively we did relax,” Nowitzki said. “We took a step back from the first two series. Portland and L.A. obviously are bigger teams, and now we’re facing a different animal. We’re facing athletes on the wing, and we’re having a tough time getting some stops.”

The Spurs avoided injury and successfully navigated the Tony Parker-Eva Longoria TMZ turbulence to keep their season mostly stress-free. Even better, the smooth run allowed Tim Duncan to hibernate; nobody does auto-pilot like he does. He’s rested and ready for the postseason. So winning the West served two purposes, then. The bad news: Only once, in the strike-shortened 1998-99 season, did the Spurs win the West outright and also the NBA title. The Lakers blew a shot at the conference title with a sloppy finish, but that’s not the title they’re chasing.

MVP: Kevin Durant (66.7 percent) — Derrick Rose, a strong candidate, didn’t get a single preseason vote. That tells you he caught even the talent experts by surprise. It happens; Back in 2004-05, Steve Nash went from very good to great and won his first of back-to-back MVPs. Durant was the popular preseason candidate mostly because of the momentum he carried into the season. The way he and the Thunder made the Lakers sweat in the 2010 playoffs was still fresh on the minds of the voters. Also, he did set a blistering scoring pace for himself the last three seasons — therefore, much was expected. Circumstances ultimately hurt Durant and helped Rose. Durant was “punished” for having All-Star Russell Westbrook as a teammate, while Rose was “rewarded” when Boozer and Noah were hurt.

Breakout season: Blake Griffin and Russell Westbrook (14.8 percent) — No love for Kevin Love, who didn’t get any votes, and yet will win the rebounding title in a surprise. Best point guard: Deron Williams (50 percent) — Once again, Rose didn’t fetch any confidence from the GMs in what admittedly is a tough category to score. There are at least a half-dozen solid point guards in circulation right now (with Chris Paul foremost among them). While on the subject of point guards, chew on this: Jason Kidd has averaged at least 8.0 apg in 17 of his 18 seasons.

Rookie of the year: John Wall (67.9 percent) — Once Blake Griffin became a fixture on YouTube, this contest was over. The sad truth, however, is neither player was good enough to lead his team anywhere. What Griffin and Wall need is to be joined by next season’s Rookie of the Year winner, a tougher task for Griffin, since the Cavs own the Clippers’ lottery pick from the Baron Davis trade.

Rookie sleeper: Luke Harangody and Patrick Patterson (11 percent) — Buried in Boston, then traded to the Cavs, Harangody never really made his sneakers squeak. Patterson, at least, has become a role-playing reserve in Houston. Knicks rookie Landry Fields was completely snubbed by GMs, which makes sense given that the

The Chicago Bulls are hoping to be able to snare the No. 1 seed in the NBA playoffs, which could setup a big time showdown with the Atlanta Hawks in the second round of the postseason. There are a few very important things that we really need to make mention of when we talk about the Bulls. The fi

rst is that this is an outstanding home team. Oh sure, we know that this is a road game, but when you have that glaring 26-4 home record, your road record is sure to not be all that great. Chicago is certainly obliging, as it is just 15-13 this season outside of the Windy City.

However, the counterpoint to that is the fact that the Bulls are really playing some tremendous basketball now that they are at full strength and that Joakim Noah and Carlos Boozer are sharing the paint together on a ni

ghtly basis. The team has snared seven victories in its last eight games, and it is 4-1 in this mark on the road to move to two games above .500.

Though two of those wins did come against postseason contenders, the Hawks are probably the best teams that the Bulls are going to take on during this stretch, at least in terms of games that are played away from the United Center.

This is a big time clash for Atlanta, as it really needs to prove that it can hang around with some of the best teams

in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks, just like Chicago, have a great record at home at 17-9, and what you’ll notice about this team is that there have been significantly more road games (34) than home games (26).

With Kirk Hinrich really not doing a solid enough job since coming over from the Washington Wizards, the rotation is even thinner now for Atlanta than it was before the trade deadline. There are only five players that are averaging more than 24 minutes per game, and they are all double digit scorers on averaged.

Of course, one of those men, Josh Smith, is dealing with a knee injury right now, and he might be held out of this one on Wednesday. If he is, the Hawks could be in a lot of trouble, as Smith is putting up 16.6 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, second on the team in both categories.

Again, this one means a lot more to the Hawks than it does to the Bulls, and if this ends up holding true, the hosts should end up ruling the day, with or without Smith. At some point, Hinrich really needs to prove his worth at the point guard spot, and though he won’t outshine Derrick Rose, even remotely hanging in there with him is crucial.
