He is well known for his humanitarian efforts in his native Sudan and founded Sudan Sunrise, a humanitarian group based in Lenexa, Kan., that promotes reconciliation in Sudan.

Manute is famous for his Shot Blocking as he has a great height. Bol was one of the league’s most imposing defensive presences, blocking shots at an unprecedented rate. Along with setting the rookie shot blocking record in 1985-86, over the course of his career Bol tied for the NBA record for the most blocked shots in one half (eleven) and in one quarter (eight, twice) , and he holds the all time NBA record for most blocked shots per minute.

History of the Houston Rockets

June 18th, 2010 No comments

The Houston Rockets are a basketball team in the National Basketball Association. The story of the Rockets began in 1967 in San Diego.  The team was created and joined the NBA in 1967. They started off in San Diego as the San Diego Rockets. They remained in San Diego for just 4 years however. They moved to Houston, a city more fitting for their team name, in 1971.

Things were not always good for the Rockets. They managed to win just 15 games in their first season.

The Rockets w

ould not be held back from obtaining a playoff berth for long though. The Rockets turned around the story of their franchise with one draft pick. Elvin Hayes was picked first overall by the Houston Rockets in the 1969 NBA Draft. After drafting Hayes the Rockets were on their way to success.

In just their first season after drafting Hayes the Rockets managed to make the playoffs. He was later used as trade bait to obtain the legendary Moses Malone. While Moses Malone was on the Rockets he

became one of the best players in the NBA. He managed to win the “Most Valuable Player” award twice while he was in Houston. In just his first season as a Rocket, he led the team all the way to the Conference finals.

By 1981, the Rockets were among the league’s elite. Malone managed to carry the team to the NBA Finals, where they took on the Boston Celtics. This was the first NBA Finals appearance in franchise history. Unfortunately, the Celtics were too much for the Rockets. The Rocke

ts were defeated by the Celtics in 6 games.

The Rockets had success in the early years of their franchise, but their greatest highlights began in 1984. In 1984 the Houston Rockets drafted Hakeem Olajuwon. Olajuwon was a center that managed to bring the Rockets to the finals in just his 2nd NBA season. They met the Celtics once again in the finals, but were defeated again. The team managed to make the playoffs several times over the next decade, but they were mostly thwarted in the playoffs until the latter part of that 10 year span.

In 1994 the Rockets returned to a level of glory. They started out the season 15-0, led by Olajuwon. He went on to win the MVP of the league and Defensive player of the year. He went on to win the Finals MVP award as well, as he led the Rockets to victory over the New York Knicks. This marked the first championship in team history.

In 1995 Hakeem Olajuwon once again led them to the finals. Olajuwon took his game to an unreal level in this appearance. They were just a sixth seed, but they looked amazing in the NBA Finals. The team took on the Orlando Magic, led by Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq was well known as the league’s top “up and coming” big man. Olajuwon showed Shaq the ropes that season. The Magic were swept by the Rockets in 4 games.

These back to back championships stand as the highlights of the history of the Rockets. They have since continued to contend. They have almost always been a threat for the playoffs, but have never had the same presence in the playoffs. They are currently led by the oft-injured Yao Ming. Ming has shown flashes of brilliance, but has not been able to stay on the court long enough to allow his team to develop.

NBA- Celtics Beat Lakers in Game Five and go up 3-2 in the Final Series

June 16th, 2010 No comments

The Boston Celtics are one step from becoming the new NBA Champions after beating Los Angeles Lakers in Game Five, 92-86 in the Finals at the TD Garden on Sunday. The team of Doc Rivers, led by Paul Pierce (27 points), completely surpassed the Lakers. Despite the good contribution of Kobe Bryant and his 38 points, the Lakers couldn’t stop the good teamwork of Boston. The Lakers lack of contribution from Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol and the other starters was the cornerstone for L.A’s defeat

Boston was able to use their best weapons and took advantage of a better group performance, with its four stars contributing throughout the game.

The Celtics entered the game much sharper than the Lakers, who received a 6-0 run from Boston. The Lakers could not find their key-players and it took 10 minutes for Bryant to score and 12 minutes for Gasol. Before the reaction of these two starters, Andrew Bynum and Derek Fisher were in charge of the Lakers offensive end in the first quarter. Be

cause of these two players performance the Lakers finished the 1st quarter down by only 2 points, 22-20. For the Celtics the best scorer in this quarter was Paul Pierce with 8 points.

In the second quarter, the Celtics had an 8-2 run and extended their lead to 8 points with 8:54 to play. However, the Lakers responded with some baskets from Bryant to cut down the gap by only 2 points, 39-41. Two jump shot baskets from Pierce closed the quarter, 45-39 in favor of Boston.

During the third quart

er, it was Kobe Bryant’s recital. The Lakers’ superstar scored the first 19 points of his team in the opening eight minutes of the period. Either Ray or Tony Allen could not stop him and it was a memorable exhibition that at the same time confirmed Bryant as the Lakers’ only offensive thread.

Paul Pierce responded with 11 points for the team in this quarter and also found support from his teammates, who made good the phrase: “players win games and teams titles.”

The Celtics finished the third quarter winning by 8 points, 65-73.

During the last quarter both teams kept their determination and strength. The Celtics were holding their lead while the Lakers were focusing on cutting the lead and win the game. However, despite the effort of the Lakers to cut the scoring to 6 points with 6:01, the Celtics kept responding with some great plays, increasing their lead again to 12 points with 3:56 to go.  Nevertheless, with a run of 7-0, the Lakers brought down the difference to 5 points with 1:30. Ron Artest’s two missed free throws and a great play by Pierce with Rondo, gave the final victory to the Celtics, 92-86.

Celtics guard Paul Pierce said that this was a very important victory, since the Celtics really don’t want to end the series in L.A down by one game.

“You don’t want to go into LA down 3-2 with two games in LA. So this was the biggest game of the year. Every game gets bigger. Great opportunity for us — got two games in LA, we’ve just got to get one. We’ve been a great road team all year. We’re just going to try to get it done,” expressed Pierce, who had 27 points.

The best scorers for the Boston Celtics were Paul Pierce with 27 points and 2 rebounds; Rajon Rondo with 18 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds; Kevin Garnett with 18 points, 10 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assists; and finally Ray Allen with 12 points and 3 rebounds. For the L.A Lakers, the best scorers were Kobe Bryant with 38 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists; Pau Gasol with 12 points and 12 rebounds; and ultimately Derek Fisher with 9 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

Phil Jackson and his team now return home. They need to win the two remaining matches to avoid Boston’s 18th NBA title. Game 6 will be held this Tuesday, June 15th at the Staples Center.

Benefits of Plyometrics for Improving Jumping and How it Will Speed your Dunk Training Results

June 13th, 2010 No comments

Basketball and volleyball players have a common need in their specific sports: vertical leaping ability. An enhanced vertical leap will give the athlete the edge over his/her opponents. This is particularly true for basketball players. Basketball is a game that involves the most number of explosive moves and directional changes repeated over the course of a game. Any good Basketball Dunk training program should include Vertical plyometrics for faster results.

It is often said that bask

etball is one of the most strenuous sports when it comes to sheer physical ability. Strength plays second fiddle to speed, agility, quickness, and vertical leaping ability. An exercise called vertical plyometrics will help improve an athlete’s vertical leap by training certain muscle groups to develop explosive bursts of power that can be performed repeatedly whenever demanded. The basketball dunk training vertical leap is especially benefited using plyometrics.

Certain factors should be considered before an athlete is to train using plyometrics. Weight plays a critical factor, as athletes over 240 pounds are advised to do mild plyometrics as the training may put too much strain on muscles and tendons. Basketball players, in particular, are required to have a very low fat index as common sense will dictate tha

t the heavier the athlete is, the more difficult for the muscles to perform a higher vertical jump.

Only well-conditioned athletes with no history of any injury to the particular muscle group involved should perform vertical plyometrics, guided by a well-trained fitness coach. The exercises are very demanding and may increase the risk of injury. Mild plyometric exercises are often recommended for injury rehabilitation, but only under strict supervision.
An athlete who wants to have the edge in overall athleticism should consider vertical plyometrics to improve speed, agility and dunk training leaping ability.

Long time coming: Jets QB Sanchez no longer limited by knee injury

Sanchez had the patella-stabilizing ligament in his left knee repaired in February. The team confirmed Tuesday night that the second-year pro fully participated in 11-on-11 drills after being limited to individual and passing drills since workouts began several weeks ago.

Sanchez had hoped to be able to practice without restrictions during minicamp next week. It appears he has progressed to the point that he’ll be a full-go moving forward.

ESPNNewYork.com first reported that Sanchez fully participated in practice Tuesday.

Team doctors have told Sanchez he’s coming along faster than most who have had the same procedure. Sanchez said the most unsettling part of the rehabilitation process was dealing with the scar tissue popping in the weeks following the surgery.

“Every day, it’s feeling better, and that’s been key,” Sanchez said.

NBA Finals Tickets – What to Watch for in the Finals

June 8th, 2010 No comments

Here are some of the key storylines to watch as the Celtics take on the Lakers yet again in what should be a very entertaining NBA Finals.

5.  Lakers Coach Phil Jackson.  Before the series even began, Jackson was already chirping about officiating to draw attention to Kevin Garnett’s questionable defensive tactics.  The Zenmaster is in search of his 11th NBA title, which is ridiculous no matter who he has had on his rosters.  The longer the series goes, the more it will likely fav

or the Lakers due to Jackson’s abilities to adjust from one game to the next.  He has also been a master of motivation throughout his career, but can he motivate his big guys to bang inside with the Celtics?

4.  Lakers guard Ron Artest and Celtics forward Rasheed Wallace.  Though not matched up against one another, both players are defensive grinders who have been marred by inconsistency throughout the regular season.  Though neither will sell many <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascr

When Artest is on, he is still capable of shutting down talented scorers; he’ll have a chance to do just that against Paul Pierce.  Wallace is a big reason that the Celtics were able to get past the Orlando Magic and they’ll need another strong effort

from him to take down a title.  Though Artest and Wallace’s signings in the offseason have been criticized throughout the season, both players have the opportunity to prove that their organizations were right to bring them in.

3.  Celtics guard Rajon Rondo’s health.  If healthy, Rondo is the second best player in the Finals.  Period.  He has come on so strongly that he’s the unquestioned leader and the motor to the entire Celtics team.  Without Rondo elevating his game, the defensive effort that Boston has put forth would have been in vain and they simply wouldn’t be here.  Matched up predominately against Derrick Fisher, Rondo should have his opportunities to exploit what is an obvious mismatch on paper.  The series as a whole will suffer if Rondo is limited by his ailing back.

2.  Celtics forward Kevin Garnett and Lakers forward Pau Gasol.  When the two matched up in the Finals in 2008, Garnett was the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and Gasol had a reputation for being a bit soft.  Gasol was swiftly dominated in size during that series, exposing him as a player who shied away from contact.  Coming off of a knee injury, Garnett is not the same player he was two years ago but still plays with defensive intensity and will give Gasol all he can handle.  The series could very well come down to how these two play against one another.

1.  Lakers guard Kobe Bryant.  With his combination of skill and understanding of the game, Bryant could still be the best player in the sport.  Certainly he’ll be trying to prove just that throughout the series, the same way he did when he torched Phoenix during the Western Conference Finals.  Nobody is more motivated or hungry to win a title than Kobe Bryant, and the game’s most cold-blooded closer will be looking to add another notch to his already impressive belt.

NBA Tickets – Post-Lottery Mock Draft

May 31st, 2010 No comments

Now that the draft order is set, here is my latest mock draft for the top 14 picks:

Washington Wizards – John Wall, Point Guard, Kentucky: The Wizards must be thrilled to have won the top pick, and will almost surely draft John Wall.  Wall will be able to sells tons of <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(’/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://www.stubhub.com/nba-tickets/”>NBA tickets</a> for the Wizards and gives them a re

al building block moving forward.  The team can now shop Gilbert Arenas heavily.

Philadelphia 76ers – Evan Turner, Shooting Guard, Ohio State: The Sixers don’t really need Turner, and they could look to trade down as a result, but I think they’ll take him if they stay at the two spot.  He would be a nice player to pair with budding point guard Jrue Holiday and could allow the team to shop Andre Iguodala.

New Jersey Nets – Derrick Favors, Power Forward, Georgia Tech: I think they’ll

be tempted to take DeMarcus Cousins for more immediate impact, but I’m not sure about Cousins’ ability to play with Brook Lopez and I think Favors projects as the better pro long-term.  If the team’s new owner is willing to be just a little patient, Favors will be the pick here.

Minnesota Timberwolves – Wesley Johnson, Small Forward, Syracuse: The Timberwolves really want Turner and could look to trade up to the two spot to get him.  They’ve got two other first-round picks to help them

Title › NBA Tickets – Post-Lottery Mock Draft

get there, but I think they’ll take Johnson if they stay at four.

Sacramento Kings – DeMarcus Cousins, Power Forward/Center, Kentucky: I’m not sure if he’s a power forward or a center, but either way he’d be the best post player on the Kings.  If he matures and gets his act together, he could end up being a steal at five.

Golden State Warriors – Cole Aldrich, Center, Kansas: Aldrich has limited upside, but the Warriors desperately need a center after how badly things went with Andris Biedrins this past season.  Aldrich can defend the paint and rebound, which is exactly what Golden State needs.

Detroit Pistons – Ed Davis, Power Forward, North Carolina: The Pistons desperately need help inside and Davis would provide rebounding and defense from day one.  His offensive game needs a lot of work, but there is some potential there.  I think this would be a solid pick for Detroit.

Los Angeles Clippers – Al-Farouq Aminu, Small Forward, Wake Forest: Aminu has work to do on his shooting and ball-handling, but he’s got a ton of upside.  I think he’ll end up being a pretty big riser when teams get him in for workouts and see the kind of athlete he is.  He’s got bust potential, but he’s got serious upside.

Utah Jazz – Greg Monroe, Power Forward, Georgetown: Monroe would be an ideal fit for the Jazz.  He’s a skilled big man that can pass and has a high basketball IQ.  Jerry Sloan will love him and he’d be a solid backup for Paul Millsap with Carlos Boozer’s departure seeming imminent.

Indiana Pacers – Avery Bradley, Point Guard, Texas: Bradley might not be a true point in the end, but some people are touting him as a Russell Westbrook-type.  Westbrook’s success should help Bradley’s stock and the Pacers desperately need someone to run their offense.  He’s already a top-tier on-ball defender and has a nice outside shot.

New Orleans Hornets – Ekpe Udoh, Power Forward, Baylor: Udoh is already a defensive presence, but has shown signs of a developing offensive game.  The Hornets need size and he’s good value here.

Memphis Grizzlies – Patrick Patterson, Power Forward, Kentucky: Patterson didn’t play the biggest role for the Wildcats this past season but he’s got an NBA body, is a tough kid and can shoot the mid-range jumper.  I think he’s going to end up being a very good player in this league.  The Grizzlies need insurance in the event that Zach Randolph leaves after the 2010-11 season.

Toronto Raptors – Hassan Whiteside, Center, Marshall: The Raptors will likely look to rebuild if Chris Bosh leaves town.  Whiteside has a ton of potential, but will need time to develop.  He’s a true center and could enable Andre Bargnani to eventually slide over to his more natural position at the four.

Houston Rockets – Gordon Hayward, Small Forward, Butler: Teams are going to fall in love with Hayward as they get to know him more.  He’s a good character guy and a much more impressive physical specimen t

Miami Heat Tickets – Dwyane Wade Is the Other Potential Big Free Agent

May 28th, 2010 No comments

Lost in the speculation about where LeBron James will end up next season is another huge star in the NBA: Dwyane Wade.  Though he’s already done plenty in Miami and they were in the playoffs last season, Wade could still opt to take his skills elsewhere.  Surely there are going to be no shortage of suitors.  Here’s a look at the decision Wade will be faced with this upcoming free agency period.

Why he should stay in Miami:

Like LBJ in Cleveland, Wade is a staple of South Be

ach.  He’s the most popular player in their franchise’s history and has already hand-delivered an NBA title.  Though they don’t have too many pieces around him at the moment, it’s clear that he will have a substantial role in the decision making if he looks to stay in Miami, which can be a very enticing situation.  Money isn’t much of an issue for Wade, who is guaranteed to get a max deal, so financially there isn’t much more that he can outside of Miami.

Because Wade is still one of

the elite players in the league, he can also make Miami a very attractive place for big free agents to come; no state tax in Florida is another reason athletes have been interested in signing with Floridian sports franchises.  Wade is also in a rare position to go down as the one of the few legendary players who to play an entire career in one city, which would only solidify his status as a demigod in South Florida.  He already sells plenty of <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTr

acker._trackPageview(’/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://www.stubhub.com/miami-heat-tickets/”>Miami Heat tickets</a> as it is.

Even if they definitely need to improve to challenge for another title, the Heat still had enough to secure the fifth seed in the East in 2009-10, which suggests that they may only be a big piece away from moving towards the top of the Eastern Conference standings.  Jermaine O’Neal and his monstrous contract will come off the books as well, giving the Heat enough money left over to sign Wade and perhaps even another big contract.  And in the case that he could bring LeBron down, a possibility that is unlikely but one not to be ignored, they would be perennial title contenders.

Why he should go:

Most of the reasons to stay in Miami revolve around issues of loyalty and the reputation he has already earned with the Heat organization and fans.  It’s also true that there are plenty of worse situations than a team that reached the playoffs in 2009-10, but Wade is also a fierce competitor not different from LeBron and Kobe Bryant.  Wade wants to win more titles and go down as one of the greatest players ever, and to do that he will likely have to consider other options.  The Heat could remain a strong team in the East with Wade next season, but building towards a championship appears to be an uphill and arduous trek.

The reason for this mainly is the slow development of Michael Beasley, who the Heat had high hopes for after drafting him second overall in the 2008 draft.  Beasley has shown his substantial overall talent on occasion but has been incredibly inconsistent.  Overall, Beasley doesn’t seem to be handling the pressure that comes with being the second overall pick and it could end badly in Miami if the Heat don’t trade him, which they are rumored to be looking to do.

Without bringing in another marquee player, the roster is very listless and the Heat are in desperate need of surrounding Wade with some sharp shooters who can help with spacing.  The good teams in the league still fighting in the playoffs all have a substantial post players, a luxury the Heat simply do not have currently on their roster.

Unless the Heat make it very clear that they are committed to doing all they can to elevate the team to becoming a consistent title contender, Wade has to consider leaving.  Kevin Garnett recently told LeBron James that it’s unwise to waste one’s youth in a bad situation because you can never get back your peak years.  The same advice certainly holds true for Dwyane Wade.

NBA: Charlotte Bobcats History

May 24th, 2010 No comments

The Charlotte Bobcats are a new addition to the National Basketball Association as of 2004. The Bobcats came to Charlotte after another fairly recent expansion team, the Charlotte Hornets, relocated to New Orleans.

The decision for the Hornets to relocate away from Charlotte was an interesting one in the minds of many. North Carolina is known for its love of basketball and many saw the state as a place that should have a basketball team.

The Bobcats have quickly seen success in the N

Gerald Wallace was picked up by the Bobcats in their expansion draft as a player from the Sacramento Kings. Wallace was then a young athlete, but has since developed into a great defender and rebounder with adequate scoring

The combined efforts of Okafor and Wallace provided the Bobcats with a solid defensive team. This really set the tone for the type of team that this franchise wanted to represent it.

Things have slowly continued to improve since the conception of the Bobcats. As expected, their first few seasons brought only 20-30 wins. It takes a few years for a team to develop. Things h

ave taken a turn upward recently, led by Larry Brown, a legendary coach.

In his first season Larry Brown managed to lead the Bobcats to a team record 35 wins. This total was just 4 games out of the 8th seed position in the Eastern Conference.

2010 has been the biggest story of the Bobcats franchise thus far. In 2010 the Bobcats made history, securing their first playoff spot ever with an impressive 44-38 season. Larry Brown has been known throughout his career for his ability to turn around poor teams and bring them to the playoffs. Once again, Larry Brown showed that ability in leading the team to the playoffs.

In their first playoff appearance the Bobcats did not fare well. They faced off against the Orlando Magic who are a young, talented team, led by Dwight Howard. The size of Howard combined with the talent of his supporting cast was just too much for the Bobcats to handle. The Magic were able to defeat the Bobcats in an easy series. The series finished 4-0 in the favor of the Magic.

Although 2010 ended with a sour note the Bobcats have a lot to look forward to. Recently, basketball legend Michael Jordan was approved to become the majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. Jordan is known for his competitive nature and many people feel like he will go to whatever lengths necessary to bring this team to the top. The Charlotte Bobcats are a team that is looking up after just a few years in the National Basketball Association.
