Even though I had a master’s degree in Phys. Ed from Arizona State University, baseball was the major sport I was least knowledgeable about.
So, I decided to research alternative practice methods. I observed a variety of teams during practice ranging from seven year olds to college level players. I noticed that the
best practices were not necessarily the longest and that the most organized coaches wasted little time. On most of the drills every player was involved. It was amazing the way some coaches integrated fun and learning and how creative some of the drills and games were. I began to use some of these techniques with my team. After a little trial and error I was actually able to run a more effective practice in half the time.
To run a practice like this does take preparation, mostly at the beginning of the season. But coaches need not look at this as a chore. It can be as much fun for you as it is for the players.
The youth baseball coach, whether it’s Babe Ruth League, Little League, or local Park and Recreation Dept., should make a list of drills at the beginning of the year that they are interested in trying. The idea is to be creative. When my oldest son was eight, I began a practice with a simple relay race, consisting of two lines of six players each. To put a baseball theme into the race, I had each player wear their glove and hold two baseballs in it. The learning benefit of this relay race was to teach kids the importance of squeezing the glove. Another year I was teaching players how to bunt. When the team took batting practice, I put one cone 10 feet directly in front of home plate and another cone 10 feet to the left of the plate. Each player gets two bunts before his regular swings. For each bunt that goes between the cones, the player earns two extra swings. This motivated the players to focus when they bunted. And, it worked!
If a coach plans five to seven drills of ten to twelve minutes in length for each practice, the players will be more attentive and less bored. Don’t worry about players not liking certain drills. About a third through the season they will let you know which ones to weed out.
The youth baseball season is unlike any other season. Fathers sneak out of work early, families rarely eat dinner before 8:30 at night and the laundry room is active day and night. As parents and coaches, we should make practices more interesting and fun because during a typical youth baseball season, players spend as much or more time practicing than in actual games.

Before I talked my older brother to buying the expensive Jump Higher shoes they warned me! Besides most plyometric shoe companies claim that you will jump higher up to 5-10 inches on your vertical” and “take .2 seconds off of your 40 time.” My parents taught me when I was very young that if something seems too good to be true… it usually is. Is it possible for you to attain these results? Yeah I did initially when I was 17 years old. Of course it is possible. Is it likely?
Probably not always. There is no way a company can even make that claim without knowing your age, your current fitness level, your genetic predispositions, and your jump higher training experience. Yet they make this claim to everyone. Seriously, how can they claim everyone can gain 5-10 inches on their vertical and jump higher. Could your grandma? I know mine couldn’t! Just Kidding just trying to make a point!
If you are 14 years old, in average shape, have good genetics, and have never trained to jump higher before then you may very well make those types of gains in your vertical leap. However, you could make those same (if not better) gains doing a more conventional strength and conditioning program, The Jump Manual or The Jump Development Bible jump higher programs will provide you with this type of results and its about $80.00 to $100.00 cheaper. I will tell you this, if you are 23 years old, already in great shape, have average genetics, and have been seriously training for 4-5 years… you will probably not add 5-10 inches to your vertical, and you definitely won’t “double your vertical or your money back.” Why, because you have already closed in on your genetic potential. Can you still make great gains?
Of course you can. Should you still train to improve your vertical and jump higher? Most definitely. Now you can and will be able to Jump higher and make improvements using platform shoes, I would be a fool to argue otherwise. Why? Because you are still training progressively, you just happen to be wearing funny looking shoes while you are doing it! Any training, if done progressively, consistently, and with effort will yield an improvement and allow you to Jump Higher than before. So is using platform shoes better than sitting on the couch? Of course it is! Is it better than a sound, structured, strength and conditioning (and plyo) program? I don’t personally think so.
While people have the right to make whatever claims they want, my main problem with platform shoes is their increased risk of injury. They claim to “build the calf muscles and stretch the Achilles tendon.” Yet they do it in a way that drastically increases the potential risk for twisting your ankle or ruptured your Achilles. And which is potentially a career ending one.
It is my own personal opinion that platform shoes are inherently dangerous, full of hype and outrageous claims, and certainly are not the safest or most productive way to increase one’s vertical jump. After training in these shoes my Achilles tendon would ache so bad sometimes I could not walk the next day. Little did I know I was putting my own self at risk. Because these shoes do overstretch your calves quite considerably. Their is other Jump Higher programs that are sensible, safe, and cheaper and is the way to go if you ask me! The prices and their is just to much risk involves! I mean I would never let my son wear those shoes like his stupid dad did LOL!
