The National Program for Playground Safety recommends that equipment for school-age children be no higher than 8 feet and for pre-school children no higher than 6 feet. San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Series Preview

    The San Francisco Giants will be taking on the Los Angeles Dodges in a three-game series this weekend. The Giants are currently 3.5 games behind in the wild card race, and to close some ground, they have to go on the road and outplay what has been the best team in the NL, a team much deeper and disciplined than them. 

    San Francisco is currently third in the NL West behind the Dodgers and wild-

card leading Colorado Rockies with a record of 79-67. The Giants are a team that lives and dies by their starting pitching. San Francisco has one of the top pitching combos in MLB with aces Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, who have combined for a record of 27-11 and an ERA of 2.50. With this formidable duo in addition to a revitalized Barry Zitto and recent addition Brad Penny (3-0, 1.64), the Giants have one of the top rotations in baseball. This advantage is heavily mitigated by San Francisco’s d

readful offense, which lacks discipline and depth. They’re last in baseball in OBP at .308 and are 26th in runs scored. No player has drawn more than 43 walks or hit more than 21 homers.  The Giants offensive weakness shines throughout their lineup.

    Los Angeles is in first place in the NL West with an 88-59 record, the best record in the NL and second best in MLB. Their secret is simple: They’re one of the deepest and most disciplined teams in baseball. The Dodgers have a strong of

fense that’s fourth in the league in OBP, and their starting outfield of Manny Ramirez, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier may be the best in MLB. The Dodger’s top three of Clayton Kershaw, Randy Wolf, and Chad Billingsly have been very good, and closer John Broxton averages 13.56 strikeouts a game. LA has been the class of NL all year. 

    The ex-factor for the Giants in this series is former All-Star 2b Freddy Sanchez. Sanchez was acquired by San Francisco from the Pirates to give the team a little more pop, but in 20 games following the trade, he’s recorded a .322 slugging percentage. Sanchez’s already poor plate discipline has declined to the point that he’s only recorded two BB’s. Sanchez needs to get on base more for the Giants “big boppers” and contribute a little power for the offense to be threatening. If he has a good series, San Francisco has a chance.

    The ex-factor for the Dodgers in this series is Vincente Padilla, the late-season acquisition from the Texas Rangers who’s starting the opening game. Padilla was having a poor season for Texas before being put on waivers, but has turned it around with LA with a 3-0 record and 2.01 ERA. Padilla has been more effective since changing leagues, but his track record speaks for itself, and it stands to reason that he could lose it at any time. If Padilla can continue to throw well and deliver the opening game to the Dodgers, it will put an incredible amount of pressure on Penny and Lincecum in the following two games.   

     The Dodgers have the advantage this series. Neither Cain nor Zito goes for the Giants. LA has the better offense and is throwing three hot pitchers in Padilla, John Garland and Wolf. And the Dodgers are playing at home, where they’re 46-29 on the season. It is true that the Giants are desperate at this point and will be fired up for these games. But desperation can only take you so far. San Francisco is simply up against a deeper, more disciplined, and ultimately better opponent.

One (Kyle Korver) out of three Utah Jazz players has decided to remain with the Utah Jazz while the remaining two – Mehmet Okur and Carlos Boozer are still undecided. Okur’s agent, Marc Fleisher said through an email Monday that his client might be opting out, but still hadn’t decided yet. Meanwhile for Boozer, he had expressed of wanting to opt out of his contract too. He said a few months back that he might end up with the New Jersey Nets. Okur is set to earn $9 million next year while Boozer is expected to earn $12 million. Both players have been integral in helping their team reached the playoffs this season.

I was reading about the freestyle event on Wikipedia trying to understand the history of the event and a little history on the swimming stroke that is used in this event. The freestyle stroke as I have mistakenly called it all my life goes by other names.

I know it went by the name of Australian crawl and sometimes American crawl but I just never paid attention to it. Another name would be the front crawl. In the freestyle event the competitor is allowed to use the stroke that is fastest for

them, it happens to be that the front crawl is most people’s fastest stroke and is what you always see in competition.

The original stroke that was used before the front crawl was called the trudgen. This stroke was named after an English swimmer named John Trudgen who popularized the stroke in the late 1800’s. He learned the stroke from native South Americans while in Argentina.

The Australian crawl was developed from the trudgen, merging the swimming style of a Solomon Islander named A

lick Wickham who was working in Australia with the trudgen. Richard Cavill introduced the Australian crawl to the world in 1920. The style known as the American crawl was modified from the Australian crawl by American swimmer Charles Daniels.

The front crawl has really been around for centuries but was first used in competition in 1844 in London. If you look back in history you will find that swimming has always been a popular event but the breaststroke seems to have been the stroke of choice

The first modern Olympic Games in 1896 had only four swimming events, three of them were freestyle. Two of these events were the 100 meters and 1500 meters freestyle races that were held in the open water. In 1922, Johnny Weissmuller was the first pe

rson to break the one minute mark in the 100 meter freestyle swimming it in 51 seconds, it was called the Australian crawl back then.
